Is ‘no added sugar’ the same as ‘sugar-free’?
No, these are two distinct claims. ‘No added sugar’ means that no sucrose, fructose or syrup has been added during production. Natural fruit sugars may be present (in jams: 4–7 g/100 g). ‘Sugar-free’, on the other hand, implies a total of < 0.5 g/100 g. Dulcya uses the correct claim, both to comply with the law and to ensure transparency for consumers!
What are erythritol and steviol glycosides?
These are two naturally occurring sweeteners, which are safe and approved by the EFSA, both with a glycaemic index (GI) of zero. Erythritol is produced by fermentation, has virtually no calories (0.2 kcal/g) and is very well tolerated by the digestive system as it does not ferment in the gut. Steviol glycosides, on the other hand, are extracted from the stevia plant and have an extremely high sweetening power: they are between 200 and 300 times sweeter than ordinary sugar.
Are they suitable for vegans and those on a plant-based diet?
Yes, the entire ‘Dulcya’ range is completely vegan. It contains no ingredients of animal origin. The spreads contain no milk or dairy products, the chocolate is pure dark chocolate (no dairy), and the jams are 100% plant-based.
Why is there oil on the surface of the cream?
This is a sign of naturalness, not a fault. Dulcya creams do not contain artificial emulsifiers or palm oil (which normally prevent separation). The presence of natural oil on the surface indicates the absence of stabilising additives. We recommend shaking well before use.
Can a diabetic eat Dulcya products?
Yes, provided the necessary precautions are taken. The sweeteners used (erythritol and stevia) have a glycaemic index of 0 and do not stimulate insulin production. The jams contain only the natural sugars found in fruit (4–7 g/100 g), which is much less than in traditional jams (~60 g/100 g). We recommend eating them in moderation (1–2 teaspoons) and pairing them with fibre, protein or healthy fats to further reduce the glycaemic spike. You should always consult your doctor or diabetologist.
How dDulcyas compare with similar products on the market?
Dulcya It is a premium, clean-label brand: few ingredients, high-quality raw materials, natural sweeteners and luxury packaging. Unlike its ‘health-conscious’ competitors, who often use maltitol (GI ~35) or syrups, Dulcya chooses only erythritol and stevia – the sweeteners with the best metabolic profile available. The target audience is the discerning, health-conscious consumer, not the customer ‘on a diet’.
What are the best food combinations for reducing the glycaemic peak of jams?
Although Dulcya jams already contain very little natural sugar, pairing them strategically further reduces their glycaemic impact. We recommend enjoying them with Greek yoghurt, ricotta or fresh cheeses, as protein and healthy fats slow down the absorption of carbohydrates. They also go very well with wholemeal or rye bread (thanks to the fibre content) or with nuts such as walnuts and almonds. Finally, if you’re looking for the option with the lowest glycaemic impact of all – particularly suitable for diabetics and athletes – go for our wild berry jams (blueberries, raspberries or strawberries).
How should the products be stored?
Jams should be stored in a cool, dry place; once opened, they should be kept in the fridge. Spreads should be stored at room temperature (not in the fridge, to maintain the correct consistency). Chocolate should be stored in a cool, dry place, away from sources of heat. Always check the best-before date on the label.
What is ‘OK Green’?
OK Green is one of our innovative sweeteners: 100% natural and made from erythritol and stevia, with twice the sweetening power (2x) of sucrose. It is calorie-free, has no aftertaste and no glycaemic index, and is recommended by A.I.D. (the Italian Diabetes Association). You can find out more on
this page.
In what formats are jams and spreads available?
The jams and spreads are available in handy 200 g jars.
Are these products intended exclusively for people with diabetes or for those on a diet?
